Friday June 4th

in Aherlow House Hotel at 9pm

All registrations at Moroneys Bar Lisvarrinane on following mornings

 

 

 The launch evening affords you the opportunity to meet members of the Galtee Walking Club who are will be your guides for the weekend.  You can also view all the walking routes, meet your fellow walkers and discuss your chosen walk .

Registration opens 1 hour before the listed start time of each walk, please be punctual to accommodate bus transfers and your fellow walkers

All Walkers must sign out at base after each walk

Saturday June 5th 

 

A Walk:   Galtee Peaks from the West

Registration up to 9am.          Bus Departs 9.15am sharp

Distance: 20km. 

Highest Point Galtymore (919m)

Walking Time: 7 hours

This “A” Walk is for very experienced walkers, taking in 5 peaks along the Galtees; starting from Combán Wood up to Temple Hill on to Galtymore, Galtybeg and Cush and back down to pick up point at Clydagh Bridge.   This is a challenging route with ascents and descents for the seasoned A walker.

  

B Walk:  Galtymore

Registration up to 10.15am.   Bus departs 10.30am sharp

Distance 13km. 

Highest Point Galtymore (919m).

Walking time 5  hours.

Saturday’s B walk starts from the Galtee Castle Car Park via King’s Yard  on the southern side of the Galtees taking in Galtymore, Slievecushnabinnia and returning to pick up point at Clydagh Bridge via the Old Ice Road.

 

C Walk (1): Lough Curra

Registration up to 12 noon.    Bus departs 12.15pm

Distance 11km

Walking time 3-4 hours

Enjoy a 3 -4 hour hike to Lough Curra along forest track passing Saunders Lodge , out on to open moorland and then taking the Old Ice Road to Curra.  This route affords great views of the Galtees and back over the Glen of Aherlow Valley.

 

C Walk (2): Darby’s Bed

Registration at 12.15pm         Bus departs 12.30pm

Distance 11km

Walking Time 3 – 4 hours

From the car park walk to Darby’s Bed, Megalithic Tomb, cross over by Annagh Hill and Moor Abbey Hill, visit the Giants Bed, Wedge Tomb along the way and walk back to base in Lisvarrinane Village.  Enjoy super views of the Galtees, Galbally Village and entire Glen of Aherlow Valley.

 

Sunday June 6th 

 

A Walk:   Galtee Peaks from the East

Registration up to  9.00am.    Bus Departs 9.15am sharp

Distance 25km

Highest Point Galtymore (919m).

Walking time  7 hours.

Starting from the Mountain Road near Cahir, this A Walk will cross the Galtee to Greenane, Galtee Beag, Galtymore & Slievecushnabinnia to the  pick up point at Clydagh Bridge. This is a very challenging route for the seasoned A Walker.

 

B WalkBlackrock Valley

Registration up to  10.15am.              Bus departs 10.30am sharp

Distance 13km. 

Highest Point Galtybeg (799m)

Walking time 4  hours.

Starting on the southern slopes from the Blackrock Car Park this route incorporates hidden valleys, mountain streams and enchanting glens.  Walk by the Galtee Wall and enjoy views of both sides of the Galtees, an amazing experience on a clear day. Cross the Galtees to pick up point at Clydagh Bridge on the northern side.

  

C Walk (1):  Lake Muskry

Registration up to 12 noon                 Bus departs 12.15pm

Distance 11km

Walking time 3-4 hours

Sunday’s C Walk takes you on the most popular walking route in the Glen of Aherlow to Lake Muskry.  This is a pleasant hike along a shale track to the largest freshwater lake in the Galtees; enjoy spectacular views and fresh air in the great outdoors. 

 

C Walk (2):  Dolmen Loop

Registration up to 12 noon                 No bus required

Distance 10km

Walking time 3-4 hours

Sunday’s 2nd C Walk starts and ends Lisvarrinane Village and will take you off road through forest tracks along the Slievenamuck Hills affording super views across to the Galtees and Glen of Aherlow Valley to and from the  Dolmen, which is one of 2 Megalithic Tombs on Slievenamuck

 

 Nature Trail Walk:

Local experts on the plant/wildlife Dan Hogan & Mary Fitzpatrick will lead and talk you through series of nature trails.  Suitable for families with children, (not suitable for buggies).  Trail time 1½  - 2 hours.

  

Monday June 7th  

Registration for all Monday Walks is 9.30am.

 GPS  & Geocaching Walk : 

Walk with your guide, Michael Moroney, who will demonstrate how to optimise the use of the GPS.  Find and download the Cache on Slievenamuck.

Experience this powerful and unique navigational aid. Set up GPS for recording route.  Save waypoints and tracks on your GPS. Navigate ‘Go to’; ‘Track Back’;   Learn how to save and upload your route to OSI Trailmaster or Geolives

 

Low Level A Walk: (4 Hours) Low Level B Walk: (2 Hours)

Both these walks will start out together with the A group crossing Slievenamuck to the Millennium Stone, which was erected in 2000 and designed by renowned sculptor Jarlath Daly.  The B group will break away for the shorter loop; all will enjoy views of the Glen from the famous Christ the King Statue

 

Cost of Walks

A €20: B €20: C €15 GPS Walk €20 (includes bus transfers and refreshments on return to base)

Nature Trail Walk: Adults €5 Children €2 

 

Weekend Entertainment 

Friday Night:           9pm Launch at Aherlow House Hotel, music session 

Saturday Night:       9.30pm Seisun in Coach Road Pub (to be confirmed) 

Sunday Evening:     Sing Song in Moroney’s Bar from 5pm
