The IRA Memorial in the square of Galbally, commemorates the officers and men of Galbally who died “on scaffold, field and from hardships endured in the struggle for Irish Independence”. Thomas Whelan, hanged in Mountjoy, 14th March 1921, Edmund Foley and Patrick Maher, hanged in Mountjoy, 7th June 1921, Michael Scanlan, killed in action, 27th October 1920, James Scanlan, Sean Lynch, William P. O’ Brien, Michael Quish, Liam Fraher, John J. O’ Brien and Eamonn O’Brien, some of those who took part in the Knocklong Rescue.
